What is a Business Reply mailpiece?
A Business Reply mailpiece is a pre-addressed, specially formatted, bar-coded envelope, postcard, label, or flat that enables a business to pay the postage for mail received from its customers. The business provides Business Reply mailpieces as a convenience to its customers. A customer can mail a Business Reply mailpiece back to the business without taking the time to write the mailing address on it and without putting any postage on it.

Unlike a Courtesy Reply mailpiece, a Business Reply mailpiece does not require postage at the time it is mailed. Instead, the U.S. Postal Service collects the postage - plus a service fee - from the business to whom the Business Reply mailpiece is mailed.

Before you can create a Business Reply mailpiece and use it, you must: Your local U.S. Postal Service "Mailpiece Design Analyst" will assist you with these tasks. A Mailpiece Design Analyst is a U.S. Postal Service employee that has received special training in the U.S. Postal Service rules and procedures that govern Business Reply Mail.

To find out how to get in touch with the Mailpiece Design Analyst that is assigned to your geographical area, go to http://pe.usps.gov/mpdesign/mpdfr_mda_lookup.htm, enter the first three digits of your Zip code, and click the "Search" button.

Note that there are actually two different kinds of Business Reply mailpieces:
  1. Domestic Business Reply mailpieces
  2. International Business Reply Mailpieces.
Most Business Reply mailpieces are Domestic Business Reply mailpieces. They look like the picture above and are usually called, simply, "Business Reply mailpieces." Domestic Business Reply mailpieces can be distributed only in the United States — they can't be distributed in foreign countries.
